Abstract
Probation officers are encouraged to undertake a health promotion role in relation to HIV/AIDS by discussing safer sex and safer injecting with clients of the service. Whilst a number of probation services have provided HIV/AIDS awareness training for staff, this does not guarantee that all officers will feel comfortable discussing issues with clients. Drawing on a survey of staff views in a Midlands probation service, this article considers the extent to which probation officers can and do undertake a health promotion role in relation to HIV/AIDS in their practice.
