Our separate though related research projects which inform this article include interview programmes with conservation managers and local Maori (see Coombes, 2002; Hill, 2003). Interviews are cited according to the title of the interviewee, with the date included. The research also included extensive use of archival sources, some of which are cited in the text, and contributes to the Treaty of Waitangi claims of local iwi.
