Abstract

VM12-SHC is a new martensitic steel developed by Vallourec & Mannesmann steel with 12% Chromium content. Thanks to this, it has very high corrosion resistance properties and is foreseen to the high temperature and pressure parts of boilers. In spite of very high corrosion resistance properties, VM12-SHC does not have the creep strength at 650°C as declared by the producer and, what is more, it has even worse creep strength than P92 steel at 620°C. Nevertheless, VM12-SHC can be used satisfactorily as superheater tubes and is also planned to be used in ultra-supercritical boilers (720°C) as a membrane walls. Therefore, the use of VM12-SHC in pressure parts requires qualified welding procedures. In connection with this, results of all necessary investigations have been presented hereby in this paper. As was proved, all required mechanical properties of butt-welded joints with tubes ø44.5 × 8.8 mm met requirements of EN 12952-6 standard and PED 97/23/EC rules.
