Cladding of pressure equipment; case studies and the choice of various types of application.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to provide a contribution on the subject of weld overlay on the basis of experience acquired by Walter Tosto SpA in the fabrication of cladded products. Following a brief overview of cladding processes, materials used and production guidelines, an analysis is provided of the specific case of the fabrication of coke drums, with a description of issues and solutions for overcoming principle criticalities.

M. Del Prete

Matteo Del Prete (27) was awarded a degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Aquila in 2008. In 2010, while completing Master-level studies in Pressure Process Equipment: Design and Manufacturing, he qualified as International Welding Engineer (IWE) and International Welding Inspector (Comprehensive) (IWE-C). Since 2011, he has been working as welding engineer in the welding department of the firm Walter Tosto SpA.

L. Saturno

Luca Saturno (23) was awarded the Italian HS Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (Perito Meccanico) in 2007 at the I.T.I.S. Luigi di Savoia in Chieti. He has been working in the welding department at Walter Tosto SpA since 2008. In 2010, he was awarded the IWT and IWI-C certificates.

D. Quintiliani

Davide Quintiliani (38) holds a degree in industrial studies. He obtained a degree at the ‘G. D'Annunzio‘ University in Chieti in ‘Prevention Techniques in the Workplace’ and a second university-level qualification in ‘Inspection Techniques for the Protection of Health in the Workplace.’ He has been awarded the IWT certificate and IWI-C at certification level-II for various NDE techniques. Since 1996, he has been employed at Walter Tosto SpA. He began his career at the firm as Quality Control Inspector and in 2004 became the head of the Quality Control Department with roles relating to NDE and he is also a welding coordinator. In 2008, he was appointed head of the welding department and coordinator for welding and the selection of materials. He has written 25 technical articles concerning PED, quality, NDE and welding.
