Visual modeling as a motivation for studying mathematics and art

Abstract

The paper deals with the possibility of enriching the curriculum in mathematics, informatics and art by means of visual modeling of abstract paintings. The authors share their belief that in building a computer model of a construct, one gains deeper insight into the construct, and is motivated to elaborate one’s knowledge in mathematics and informatics. This idea is demonstrated in the context of educating pre‐ and in‐service teachers and children.

The visual modeling of some paintings by de Stijl and Kandinsky by means of identifying fundamental geometric elements and describing them by Logo procedures is discussed on the basis of the authors’ experience in various class settings in Bulgaria and Macedonia.

Visuelles Modellieren als Motivation für das Studium von Mathematik und Kunst

Das Papier beschreibt die Möglichkeit, das Curriculum für Mathematik, Informatik und Kunst durch Anteile von “Visuellem Modellieren” abstrakter Gemälde anzureichern. Die Autoren sind der Meinung, dass man durch den Aufbau eines Computermodells einer Konstruktion tiefere Einsichten in die Konstruktion gewinnt und dadurch motiviert wird, sein Wissen in Mathematik und in Informatik zu vertiefen. Diese Ansicht wird in Zusammenhang mit der Ausbildung von Kindern, Lehramtsstudenten und fertigen Lehrern gezeigt.

Das visuelle Modellieren einiger Gemälde von de Stijl und Kandinsky durch das Identifizieren grundlegender geometrischer Elemente und ihrer Beschreibung durch LOGO‐Prozeduren wird an Hand von Erfahrungen der Autoren in Bulgarien und Mazedonien bei unterschiedlichen Gruppenzusammensetzungen diskutiert.

Le modelage visuel source de motivation pour l’étude des Mathématiques et des Arts

Cet article traite de la possibilité d’enrichir le cursus de mathématiques,d’informatique et d’art à l’aide de modelages visuels et de peintures abstraites. Les auteurs font partager leur vision selon laquelle lorsqu’on élabore la maquette informatique d’une construction,on a une vision plus profonde de cette construction et on est motivé pour exprimer ses connaissances en mathématiques et en informatique.La démonstration de cette idée se fait dans un contexte de formation initiale et continue des professeurs ainsi que des enfants.

Le modelage visuel de certaines peintures de de Stijl et de Kandisnsky par l’identification des éléments géométriques fondamentaux et par leur description selon les protocoles Logo fait l’objet d’une analyse fondée sur les expériences des auteurs dans diverses situations de classe en Bulgarie et en Macédoine.
