Beyond digital connectivity: the value of communication and the communication of valuesFootnote

Abstract

This article deals with the consequences of new information and communication technologies with respect to the integration of production and administration within companies. A special focus lies on access and delivery of information in order to enable a higher degree of flexibility for organisational processes. Especially in the field of production the access to computer networks is limited. Workers in non-computer-related workplaces are normally excluded from the new communication environment. The installation of digital bridges between different parts of a company therefore implies a transition from hierarchy to networks. Additionally, successful communication needs agreements about a good communication culture. The communication of shared rules and values (e.g. openness, politeness) within accepted channels might especially enhance an integration of the production sector.
