Abstract
This paper considers the relationship between the presence of a developmental disorder affecting learning and intellectual ability (mental retardation) of multiple possible aetiologies and mental health. There is good evidence that the prevalence rates of psychiatric and behavioural disorders are increased in this population but the factors that contribute to increased risk or are protective have not been established.A change in the apparent mental state and/or behaviour of a person with mental retardation requires a detailed assessment the aim of which is to develop an holistic understanding that can inform intervention.A psychiatric diagnostic approach is but part of developing a multidisciplinary perspective.
