Time-series effects and degradation of control chart performance resulting from overadjustment

Pages 99-112 | Published online: 28 Jul 2006

Abstract

The Nelson funnel experiment illustrates the principle that increased process variation results from overadjustment of in-control processes. This paper examines this principle from a time-series perspective. Additionally, this study demonstrates that overadjustment has a detrimental effect on ability of standard control charts to detect special-cause variation.
