Multiple Perspectives on the Trump Administration's Attitude to Cultural Funding

Parsing the NEA’s troublesome DNA

Pages 329-334 | Published online: 15 Nov 2017

Notes

1 In 1957, Frank Sinatra wrote a short essay for Western World, a “bilingual transatlantic magazine” published in Brussels. The Associated Press quoted several paragraphs in a US article about rock “n” roll, suggesting that Sinatra’s generic critical comments were directed at Elvis Presley. This piece appeared in a number of newspapers, including the Los Angeles Mirror News, October 28.

3 For a good account of the relationship between Nancy Hanks and the Rockefeller Family, see Straight (Citation1988). Straight served as Hanks’ senior deputy for much of her tenure.

4 For a good account of the early NEA Visual Arts Program and its commitment to abstraction, modernity, and political/activist art, see Brenson (Citation2001).
