Summary

Experiments are described which present evidence for a contribution of Cerenkov emission to the overall lethal action of 6MVp X-rays on E. coli AB2487 rec A. The Cerenkov and X-ray-induced damage interact in an additive fashion. Furthermore, it has has been shown that substitution of bromouracil into the DNA of this strain of E. coli enhances the contribution of Cerenkov emission to the overall lethal action of the X-ray treatment.
