Notes
1Romance fiction as a genre was the object of extensive feminist analysis during the 1980s; see Sarsby Citation1983, Rabine Citation1985 and Radford Citation1986. Those findings in many ways readily apply to contemporary Asian cultural production featuring romance, from Bollywood movies to the romantic comedies of Asian playwrights.
2Kotak's own first play Hijra (2002) addresses issues of sexual identity and homosexuality in the Asian community.
3I wish to point out that I do not view the female characters in question as damaged goods but instead want to indicate that they are viewed as such within their own communities (see Welshman and Hossain Citation2005).
