Welcome to the first CSA Book Forum. This is the first of an occasional series we will be running in the journal. The Book Forum provides an opportunity to focus in depth on a recent publication related to South Asia. We commission several reviewers to write review pieces on the publication, reflecting on it from the perspective of their own concerns and disciplinary viewpoint. We then ask the author of the publication to respond to the review pieces, in the spirit of dialogue. Together the pieces in the Book Forum provide comprehensive and thoughtful coverage of recent work in our field. We hope our readers will enjoy this new feature of the journal. The series begins with an examination of Nathaniel Roberts’ recent publication, To Be Cared For: The Power of Conversion and Foreignness of Belonging in a Chennai Slum, with contributions from David Mosse, Naomi Haynes, John Harriss and Ania Loomba, followed by a response from Nathaniel Roberts.
