Abstract

This paper describes how the nonmetric multidimensional scalogram analysis (MSA-I) program was used to explore relationships between variables contained in the official records of seclusion. A worked example is provided and this outlines the essential stages in the use of the procedure. The analysis revealed several important interrelationships such as the different patterns of seclusion for informal and section (legally detained) patients, and the grades of staff authorizing seclusion use. The findings and the interpretation of these highlight important areas for future research on seclusion. The potential of the MSA procedure for analyzing qualitative data is illustrated.
