Heavy metal pollution. Part X: Impact of volcanic activity on Etnean honey.

Abstract

Samples of honey produced by bees in the vicinity of Mt. Etna volcano, in Sicily, were subjected to atomic absorption spectrometry analysis in order to determine the concentration of 24 elements. The samples appeared to contain, in relation to others from unpolluted areas, elevated levels of elements such as As, Ba, Co, K, Li, Mn, Sr and Zn. This metal enrichment is correlated to the elemental content of the leachates from Mt. Etna lava ashes.
