The occurrence of nocturnal ozone maxima at a rural site in North‐West England

Pages 75-80 | Received 07 Jul 1987, Accepted 07 Sep 1987, Published online: 17 Dec 2008

Abstract

Occasions when daily ozone maxima occurred between the hours of 2200 and 0400 GMT have been investigated. Such events can be classified into two groups: one with high windspeeds and approximately constant ozone levels throughout the day; and the other due to the breakdown in the nocturnal inversion, by an increase in turbulence, and the downward mixing of air from aloft. This second group was often accompanied by rain.
