Spence N. A. (1968) A multifactor uniform regionalization of British counties on the basis of employment data for 1961, Reg. Studies 2, 87–104. A more precise approach to the delimitation of regions will ensure a better understanding of specific regional frameworks consistent with their uses in achieving a set of goals. Methods and results of a study of British employment regions in 1961 are presented. The problem is one in efficient multivariate classification. Components analysis isolates the basic patterns of variation of employment characteristics over counties, and grouping analysis classifies the counties on the basis of these patterns with respect to some objective function. Non-contiguous grouping produces county employment typologies; groupings of counties with a contiguity constraint produces uniform employment regions.

Eine genauere Abgrenzung von Regionen wird ein besseres Verstehen spezifischer regionaler Strukturen, zugleich mit ihrer Anwendung, zur Erreichung einer Anzahl gesetzter Ziele gewährleisten. Methoden und Ergebnisse einer Studie britischer Beschäftigungsgebiete von 1961 werden beschrieben. Das Problem liegt in einer wirksamen, vielverschiedenen Klassifizierung. Die Analyse von Komponenten stellt die Grundmuster der Unterschiede der Beschäftigungscharakteristiken der Landkreise heraus, und die Gruppen analyse klassifiziert die Landkreise auf Grund dieser Muster hinsichtlich einiger objektiver Funktionen. Eine Gruppierung ohne räumlichen Zusammenhang erzeugt Beschäftigungstypen nach Landkreisen. Die Gruppierung von Landkreisen mit obligatorischem räumlichen Zusammenhang stellt einheitliche Beschäftigungsregionen dar.

Les méthodes et les résultats d'une étude sur les régions britanniques offrant des emplois en 1961 sont exposés. Une analyse à composantes distinctes isole les schémas de base des fluctuations de l'offre d'emploi audelà des Comtés, et l'analyse générale groupe des Comtés sur la base de ces schémas par rapport avec quelque fonction objective.
