Abstract
Hepworth M. (1986) The geography of technological change in the information economy, Reg. Studies 20, 407–424. Innovations in information technology are transforming urban and regional systems through their impacts on production and distribution processes. Case studies of Canadian multi-locational firms are used to examine this spatio-economic transformation in the context of the new information-based service economy. By focusing on computer networks as spatial systems of information technology, it is shown that these innovations can lead to centralized and decentralized patterns of direct production and office activity. New insights are also developed into the telecommunications-transportation trade-off and the key role of telecommunications in regional development.

Les innovations nées de la technologie de l'information sont à même de transformer les systèmes urbano-régionaux par suite de l'effet sur les procédés de production et de distribution. A partir des cas d'étude sur des entreprises canadiennes à localisations multiples il s'ensuit une analyse de cette mutation spatiale et économique dans le cadre d'une nouvelle économie orientée vers les services et fondée sur l'information. En concentrant sur les réseaux informatiques en tant que systèmes spatiaux de la technologie de l'information, on montre que ces innovations peuvent entraîner une répartition centralisée et décentralisée de l'activité dans les fabriques et aux bureaux. Il se développe aussi une meilleure compréhension de l'échange télécommunication-transportation et du rôle-clé des télécommunications dans le développement régional.

Durch Auswirkungen auf Produktions- und Verteilerprozesse bewirken Innovationen in der Informationstechnologie die Umgestaltung städtischer und regionaler Systeme. Fälle kanadischer Firmen mit einer Vielzahl von Standorten werden untersucht, und dazu benutzt, diesen räumlich-wirtschaftlichen Wandel im Zusammenhang der neuen, auf Information basierenden Dienstleistungswirtschaft zu prüfen. Indem die Aufmerksamkeit auf Komputernetze als räumliche Systeme der Informationstechnologie konzentriert wird, wird gezeigt, dass diese Innovationen zu einem zentralisierten wie dezentralisierten Vorbild direkter Produktions- und Bürowirklichkeit führen können. Es werden auch neue Einsichten in die Wechselwirkung von Fernverbindungen und Transportwesen und die Schlüsselstellung von Fernverbindungen bei der regionalen Enfaltung herausgearbeitet.
