Measuring construction professional services exports: a case for change

Abstract

There is limited understanding of the role of services in the wave of globalization and how the strengths of the UK service sector help to respond to the challenge of global competition. The way in which the construction export data are collected does not reflect the impact of globalization and the changes in the construction business environment, such as increasing foreign ownership, foreign affiliates and changing forms of procurement. The paper describes construction service exports, how they are collected and classified, highlighting the challenges of recording the export performance of construction services in a changing world. A case for change is made to ensure the collection of statistics better reflects the role of construction professional services.

L'on a une compréhension limitée du rôle des services dans la vague de la mondialisation et de la manière dont les points forts du secteur britannique des services contribuent à relever le défi de la concurrence mondiale. La façon dont les données du secteur du bâtiment à l'exportation sont collectées ne reflète pas l'impact de la mondialisation et les changements intervenant dans le secteur du bâtiment, tels que l'augmentation des participations étrangères, les filiales étrangères et les formes d'approvisionnement qui évoluent. L'article décrit les exportations de prestations du bâtiment, la manière dont elles sont collectées et classées, en soulignant les défis que pose l'enregistrement des performances à l'exportation des prestations du bâtiment dans un monde en pleine évolution. Des arguments sont avancés pour opérer des changements qui garantiront que les statistiques collectées reflètent mieux le rôle des prestations professionnelles du bâtiment.
