John Sayer

John Sayer was a farmer in Wales before moving to Asia in 1976, doing development work in India prior to taking up a post with the Asia Monitor Resource Centre (AMRC) in Hong Kong, where he researched the impact of foreign business activity on development in Asia. During his tenure as Co-Director, AMRC worked increasingly with the region's labour movements on information systems, new technology, occupational health and safety issues, and labour rights. He joined Oxfam Hong Kong in 1991 to head its programme department, later becoming its Director. He returned to the UK in 2001 as interim director of Oxfam International, and subsequently advising on its relations with the private sector. John Sayer is currently Director of Africa Now, an NGO providing business development services and market and financing knowledge to small producers in Africa, and promoting pro-poor ethical trade.
