Ruralisation: a tool for rural transformation

Abstract

There is a concept that development practitioners have either not heard of or not read, or have chosen to ignore – ruralisation. Unlike urbanisation in urban studies, ruralisation is rarely used as a concept in rural research. It remains a poorly explored concept. By challenging existing notions about the use of the concept, this article attempts to (re)introduce ruralisation as a fundamental concept in rural studies. What is ruralisation? Why do we need it? How can we use it for rural transformations? The article addresses these critical questions. It defines ruralisation and presents its conceptual framework for rural transformation.

Il existe un concept dont les praticiens du développement n'ont pas entendu parler ou sur lequel ils n'ont rient lu, ou encore qu'ils ont choisi d'ignorer — la ruralisation. À la différence de l'urbanisation dans les études urbaines, la ruralisation est rarement utilisée comme concept dans la recherche rurale. Elle demeure un concept mal exploré. En mettant en question les notions existantes sur l'utilisation de ce concept, cet article tente de (ré)introduire la ruralisation comme concept fondamental dans les études rurales. Qu'est-ce que la ruralisation ? Pourquoi en avons-nous besoin ? Comment pouvons-nous l'utiliser pour des transformations rurales ? Cet article tente de répondre à ces questions cruciales. Il définit la ruralisation et en présente le cadre conceptuel pour la transformation rurale.

Existe un concepto sobre el cual los operadores de desarrollo no han escuchado, o no han leído, o que prefieren ignorar: la ruralización. A diferencia de la noción de urbanización en los estudios urbanos, el término ruralización raras veces aparece como concepto en las investigaciones relativas al ámbito rural. Continúa siendo una idea poco examinada. A partir del cuestionamiento de las nociones existentes en torno al uso del concepto, el presente artículo plantea (re)insertar la ruralización como un concepto fundamental en los estudios urbanos. ¿En qué consiste la ruralización? ¿Por qué la necesitamos? ¿Cómo la podemos utilizar para la transformación rural? El artículo no solo aborda estas preguntas claves sino que además define la ruralización, presentando un marco conceptual orientado a la transformación rural.
