Memory Changes

ORCID Icon &

In this editorial, we want to thank and acknowledge all those Associate Editors and Consulting Editors who have contributed to establishing and developing what has become one of the field’s highly successful journals. Of course, we also acknowledge and thank the many contributors to the journal, the numerous reviewers, and Editors of Special Issues that have become such an important part of Memory.

The idea for this journal first emerged in conversations between Sue Gathercole (who had the idea for the First International Conference on Memory) and Martin Conway. They both took the idea forward with the help of various senior colleagues and the then managing director of Psychological Press, Michael Forster. All of this happened 30 years ago, and indeed Memory’s 30th birthday will be in July 2022.

As many of you know, Professor Martin Conway sadly passed away on 30 March 2022. We at Memory are very saddened by his death and are extremely grateful to have known him as a colleague and a dear friend. Prior to Martin’s illness, Mark and Martin discussed the future of Memory and concluded that now is the time for a refresh of the journal – the old generation has made their contribution and the moment has arrived to welcome a new, vibrant, incoming generation and invite them to take Memory into the future. Accordingly, Jeremy Caplan, Ciara Greene, Kathleen Hourihan, Vanessa Loaiza, Alessandra Souza, and Peggy St. Jacques have agreed to join the Associate Editor Board, the first we hope of many new developments. Most importantly, we are very pleased that Professor Henry Otgaar of Maastricht University and the Catholic University of Leuven has accepted the post of one of the Editors-in-Chief of Memory. He will be making further appointments and changes as the new shape of the journal comes into place in the coming years. Professor Mark L. Howe will stay on as Editor-in-Chief, along with Professor Henry Otgaar, for the next few years. Of course, Professor Martin Conway will always be remembered as the founding editor of Memory along with Professor Susan Gathercole.

We thank all of those who have contributed to Memory and look forward to future papers from your research groups. We feel honored to be entrusted with moving Memory forward while at the same time respecting the values and principles that this journal was founded upon. We rely on your contributions and hope that you will continue to contribute to the vitality of the journal.
