Beginnings: women and geography at Northwestern in the 1960s

Abstract

This brief article attempts to paint a picture of the social and intellectual atmosphere in which Susan Hanson's postgraduate education took place and then discusses her particular experiences in the Geography Department at Northwestern University. It describes the sexist characteristics of American geographical university education in the 1960s and the competitive and male-dominated environment of Northwestern. It suggests that Susan's experiences at Northwestern were an important influence on her subsequent values, skills and interests as a feminist academic.

Este breve artículo intenta ofrecer un esbozo de la atmósfera social e intelectual en la que tuvo lugar la educación de posgrado de Susan Hanson, y luego desarrolla sus particulares experiencias en el Departamento de Geografía en Northwestern. Describe las características sexistas de la educación geográfica universitaria estadounidense en los años 60 y el ambiente competitivo y dominado por los hombres que existía en Northwestern.
