Abstract
International mobility has become a key requirement in science and technology (S&T) professional career progression. On the one hand, the increasing mobility of women suggests that this may be a way for them to avoid or get away from women-unfriendly working environments. On the other hand, international mobility can present problems for women as they, particularly, have to plan their lives around their professional goals and personal lives. This article addresses the international mobility strategies of women regarding their personal and professional choices. We analyse their motivations to move, the way they manage their lives abroad and the effects of mobility on their lives. The analysis is based on 24 in-depth interviews of highly skilled women working in Spanish S&T sectors. Our main findings show that mobility is a new challenge which may improve women's family lives and professional careers. However, they have to plan carefully their lives on a long-term as well as a daily basis. In this sense, they need strong personal determination and the ability to balance their professional and personal goals. Moreover, their personal decisions depend not only on them as individuals, but also on their partners and families, on wider social values, on the institutional support they enjoy, and on the general public policies which they are affected by.
La movilidad internacional se ha vuelto un requerimiento clave en el avance en las carreras de ciencia y tecnología. Ello implica dos aspectos claves de género. Por un lado, la creciente movilidad de las mujeres sugiere que esta puede ser una forma para que ellas eviten o escapen de ambientes de trabajo poco amigables para las mujeres. Por otro lado, la movilidad internacional puede presentar problemas para las mujeres ya que ellas, particularmente, tienen que planear sus vidas alrededor de sus objetivos profesionales y sus vidas personales. Este artículo aborda las estrategias de movilidad internacional de las mujeres con respecto a sus elecciones personales y profesionales. Analizamos sus motivaciones para mudarse, la forma en que administran sus vidas en el exterior y los efectos que esta movilidad tiene en sus vidas. El análisis está basado en 24 entrevistas en profundidad a mujeres altamente calificadas que trabajan en los sectores de ciencia y tecnología españoles. Nuestros primeros resultados muestran que esta movilidad es un nuevo desafío que puede mejorar sus vidas familiares y sus carreras profesionales. Sin embargo, tienen que planear sus vidas cuidadosamente tanto a largo plazo como en la vida cotidiana. En este sentido, las mujeres necesitan una fuerte determinación personal y capacidad para equilibrar sus objetivos profesionales y personales. Además, sus decisiones personales dependen no sólo de ellas como individuos, sino también de sus parejas y familias, de valores sociales más amplios, del apoyo institucional que reciben, en general, y de las políticas públicas que las envuelven.
跨国能动性已成为科学与高科技专业工作发展的关键需求。其中包含两大显著性别面向：逐渐增加的能动性一方面使女性得以避免或远离对女性不友善的工作环境; 另一方面, 特别是当女性必须考虑专业目标与个人生活以进行生涯规划时, 跨国能动性则会使其面临困难。本文评析女性面对个人与专业选择时的跨国能动性策略。我们分析她们迁徙的动机、她们应对国外生活的方式, 以及能动性对其生活所产生的影响。本分析根据在西班牙科学与科技产业从事高技术含量工作的二十四位女性所进行的深度访谈。我们的主要研究发现显示能动性做为新的挑战, 或许得以促进女性家庭生活与职涯发展, 但她们必须同时谨慎规划长期生涯和每日生活, 因此她们必须具备坚强的个人意志与能力以在职场和个人目标中求得平衡。更进一步而言, 她们的个人抉择不只取决于个人, 还需同时将其伴侣与家庭、广义的社会价值、对她们的制度性支持, 以及影响女性的一般公共政策一并纳入考虑。
