The spatial and gendered politics of displaying family: exploring material cultures in grandfathers’ homes

Abstract

This article analyses the meaning that 27 men who are grandfathers ascribed to the domestic material cultures of their homes, during an exploratory study that investigated their contemporary social and cultural geographies. In recounting stories about a number of items and artefacts placed about their homes during the interviews, that they specifically related to their experiences as grandfathers, the men provided insight into the various ways in which ageing men position themselves in ambivalent ways in relation to cultural stereotypes about grandparenthood, masculinities and ageing. Moving beyond the surface of the objects on display, their discussions also revealed the complex ways in which the material cultures of their homespaces are shaped by, and reproduce, diverse family relationships and their associated politics. The article contributes to, and bridges agendas in social and cultural geography that examine the relationship between the shifting meanings of home for older men, the politics of attending to the material and both the family and older masculine identities as spatial projects.

Este artículo analiza el significado que otorgan 27 hombres que son abuelos, a las culturas domésticas materiales de sus hogares durante un estudio exploratorio que investigó sus geografías sociales y culturales contemporáneas. Al hacer un relato de historias sobre varios ítems y artefactos ubicados en sus hogares durante las entrevistas, que ellos relacionaron específicamente con sus experiencias como abuelos, los hombres brindaron una mirada hacia las varias formas en que los hombres que envejecen se posicionan a sí mismos de maneras ambivalentes en relación a los estereotipos culturales del abuelazgo, las masculinidades y el envejecer. Moviéndose más allá de la superficie de los objetos en exposición, sus discusiones también revelaron las complejas formas en que las culturas materiales de sus espacios hogareños son moldeadas y reproducidas por las diversas relaciones familiares y su política asociada. El trabajo contribuye y une las agendas de la geografía social y cultural que estudia la relación entre los significados cambiantes del hogar para los hombres mayores, la política de prestar atención a lo material y a las identidades como proyectos espaciales tanto de la familia como las masculinas mayores.

在一个检视二十七位身为祖父的男性的当代社会及文化地理之探索研究中，本文分析这些男性赋予自身家中的居家物质文化之意义。在访谈过程中，他们回顾家中摆设的诸多物品与物件的相关故事，并特别将这些物件连结至其身为祖父的经验，而该身份，则为衰老的男性矛盾地将自身置放于有关祖父身份、男性气概与老化的文化刻板印象中的多重方式，提供了洞见。若超越展示物件的表面，他们的讨论，则同时揭露了其家户空间的物质文化，受到多样的家庭关係及相关政治所形塑、并同时再製这些关係的复杂方式。本文对于社会及文化地理中，检视老年男性的家庭意义转变、关注物质的政治，以及家庭和老年男子气概身份认同作为空间计画之间的关联性之议程做出贡献，并接合这些议程。
