Bringing gender and spatial theory to life at a German technical university

Abstract

This article focuses on the use of a university sculpture garden, the renaming of streets, and advice about the use of public space in order to teach the intersection of gender theory with spatial theory. This article outlines methods for teaching gender and spatial theory to international and multidisciplinary bachelor’s and master’s students in English at a German technical university. Most of the students had not learned gender or spatial theory prior to the course. A review of the course syllabus is included, and interactive teaching methods are outlined for the writings of three scholars: Elizabeth Grosz, Henri Lefebvre, and Dolores Hayden. Three intertwined aspects of campus life: its student life, its architecture, and its outdoor sculpture are brought into conversation with those theorists. Students learn the history of their campus buildings, outdoor spaces and artwork, along with how university spaces, place naming, and storytelling all affect their educational and individual experiences. By interacting with and analyzing examples of campus architecture, urban space, and outdoor sculpture, students discover how spatial and gender theories function in everyday life. However, students were more convinced that living gendered interactions affected everyday life, and less convinced that static gender representations such as the sculpture garden or street naming impacted gender ideas and perceptions.

Resumen

Este artículo se centra en la utilización de un jardín de esculturas en una universidad, el renombramiento de calles y el asesoramiento sobre el uso del espacio público para la enseñanza de la intersección de la teoría de género con la teoría espacial. Describe métodos para enseñar teoría de género y de espacio a estudiantes internacionales y multidisciplinarixs universitarixs y de post grado en inglés en una universidad técnica alemana. La mayoría de lxs estudiantes no habían aprendido teoría de género o espacial antes del curso. Se incluye una reseña del programa de lecturas y una descripción general de los métodos de enseñanza interactivos utilizados para los trabajos de tres académicxs: Elizabeth Grosz, Henri Lefebvre y Dolores Hayden. Tres aspectos entrelazados de la vida en el campus: su vida estudiantil, su arquitectura y sus esculturas exteriores entran en diálogo con esxs teóricxs. Lxs estudiantes aprenden la historia de los edificios de su campus, de los espacios y el arte exteriores, y también cómo los espacios de la universidad, el nombramiento de los espacios y cómo se cuenta la historia afecta sus experiencias educativas e individuales. Interactuando y analizando los ejemplos de la arquitectura del campus, el espacio urbano y las esculturas exteriores y analizándolos, lxs estudiantes descubren cómo funcionan las teorías de género y espacial en la vida cotidiana. Sin embargo, lxs estudiantes estuvieron más convencidxs de que las interacciones generizadas vividas afectaban la vida cotidiana y menos persuadidxs de que las representaciones estáticas de género, tales como las esculturas del jardín o el nombramiento de las calles, tenían un impacto sobre las ideas y percepciones del mismo.

本文聚焦一所大学的雕塑花园的使用、街道的重新命命，以及有关公共空间使用的建议，以教授性别理论和空间理论的相互交织性。本文概述在德国一所技术大学中，以英语教授国际和跨领域的大学及硕士学生性别及空间理论的方法。这些学生在该课程之前多半从未学习过性别或空间理论。本文包含课程大纲的回顾，并概述三位学者所撰写的互动教学方法：伊丽莎白．格洛兹，亨利．列斐伏尔，以及陶乐丝．海登。本文将校园生活的三个交织面向：学生生涯、建筑，以及户外雕塑花园带入与这些理论的对话。学生学习校园建筑的历史、户外空间与艺术作品，同时学习大学空间、地方命名和说故事如何共同影响他们的教育与个人经验。透过与校园建筑、城市空间和户外雕塑互动，并分析这些案例，学生发掘空间和性别理论如何在每日生活中运作。但学生更信服于真实的性别化互动影响每日生活的说法，并较不相信诸如雕塑花园或街道命名的静止性别再现会影响性别观念与感知。
