When bodies do not fit: an analysis of postgraduate fieldwork

Abstract

Feminist geographers are increasingly examining embodied aspects of research. These embodied dimensions of fieldwork often build upon intersecting positionalities, yet studies focusing on bodily limitations encountered by feminists in the field are relatively few. In this article, we explore what it is like to be bodies that do not fit easily into the context within which they are supposed to be doing fieldwork. We are both female postgraduate students conducting fieldwork in the Global South. We have encountered, many times over, instances where, because of our sick and fatigued bodies, we have not been able to continue our work. We question the normalization of able-bodied postgraduate students by problematizing our own experiences, and argue that discourses of ability dominate fieldwork, in both its expectations and its conduct. This is especially the case for those with invisible disabilities because researchers may appear healthy but are not. As a result, postgraduate students may jeopardize their health for the sake of their research.

Resumen

Lxs geógraxs feministas están estudiando cada vez más los aspectos corporales de la investigación. Estas dimensiones corporales del trabajo de campo con frecuencia se basan en posicionalidades que se intersectan, sin embargo los estudios que se centran en las limitaciones corporales encontradas por lxs feministas en el campo son relativamente pocas. En este artículo analizamos cómo es ser cuerpos que no encajan fácilmente en el contexto dentro del cual deberían estar llevando a cabo su trabajo de campo. Somos dos estudiantes mujeres de posgrado llevando a cabo trabajos de campo en el Sur Global. Una y otra vez nos hemos encontrado en situaciones en las que, debido a nuestros cuerpos enfermos y cansados, no fuimos capaces de seguir adelante con nuestro trabajo. Ponemos en cuestión la normalización de lxs estudiantes de posgrado físicamente aptxs, al problematizar nuestras propias experiencias y sostenemos que los discursos de capacidad dominan el trabajo de campo, tanto en sus expectativas como en su realización. Este es el caso especialmente para aquellxs con discapacidades invisibles, porque lxs investigadorxs pueden parecer saludables cuando no lo son. Como consecuencia, lxs estudiantes de posgrado pueden poner en riesgo su salud por llevar a cabo su investigación.

摘要

女权主义地理学者逐渐开始检视研究的身体化面向。这些田野的身体化面向，经常建立在相互交织的位置性上，但聚焦女权主义者在田野中所面临的身体限制之研究则相对稀少。我们于本文中，探讨无法轻易胜任进入理应进行田野工作的脉络中的身体是什麽样态。我们同为在全球南方进行田野工作的女性研究生。我们因生病或不适的身体状况，数次面临了无法持续进行研究的境况。我们透过问题化自身的经验，对于将有能力的研究生身体视为常规提出质疑，并主张‘有能力’的论述，同时支配了田野工作的期待与进行。这对具有看不见的残疾的研究者而言特别是如此，因为研究者或许看起来健康，但实际上却并非如此。因此研究生或许会为了进行研究而损害自身的健康。
