Domesticfication of urban space? Mothering and fathering while on family leave in the inner city of Helsinki

Abstract

Cities have been described as masculine, but simultaneously emancipatory for women giving them the possibility to experiment with new identities. Women have gained access to the masculine sphere through working-life and financial independence. The new interest among families to live in inner cities has been interpreted as a way particularly for mothers to combine work with family life. Drawing on an in-depth qualitative study, this paper investigates mothering and fathering practices on family leave in Helsinki, Finland. It explores how parenting is incorporated into the mothers’ and fathers’ urban self-identity, and argues that while parenting in the city traditional gender roles are blurred. The paper proposes the term domesticfication to describe how urban middle class mothering and fathering is being inscribed in Nordic contemporary urban space.

Resumen

Las ciudades se han descrito como masculinas, pero simultáneamente emancipatorias para las mujeres, dándoles la posibilidad de experimentar con nuevas identidades. Las mujeres han ganado acceso a la esfera masculina a través de la vida laboral y la independencia financiera. El nuevo interés entre las familias por vivir en los centros de las ciudades fue interpretado como una forma para combinar el trabajo con la vida familiar, especialmente para las madres. Basándonos en un estudio cualitativo en profundidad, este trabajo investiga las prácticas de maternidad y paternidad durante la licencia familiar en Helsinki, Finlandia. Estudia cómo la maternidad/paternidad se incorpora en la propia identidad urbana de madres y padres, y sostiene que en las ciudades los roles tradicionales de género en la paternidad/maternidad se vuelven borrosos. El trabajo propone el término domestic-ificación para describir cómo la maternidad y la paternidad en la clase media urbana están siendo inscriptos en el espacio urbano nórdico contemporáneo.

城市被描绘为具有男子气概，但其同时给予女性实验新身份认同的机会，因此亦被认为对女性而言亦是解放的。女性透过工作 – 生活和财务独立，进入了男性气概的领域。家庭定居内城的崭新兴趣，特别被诠释为女性结合工作与家庭的方式。本文运用深度质性访谈，探讨在芬兰赫尔辛基家务假中的母职和父职。本文探讨亲职如何整合进母亲与父亲的城市自我认同，并主张在城市中从事亲职时，传统的性别角色变得模煳。本文提出‘家庭化’之概念，以描绘城市中产阶级母职与父职如何铭刻在北方的当代城市空间之中。
