1. ‘Materia Medica’ is the study of the remedial substances and preparations used in the practice of medicine (OED).
2. The International PEN Society is a worldwide association of writers, publishers and editors promoting freedom of expression. This society was particularly active in Northern Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s; some of its members included Joseph Tomelty, Michael McClaverty and John Hewitt.
