Bernard MacLaverty

Pages 130-132 | Published online: 23 Feb 2011

Notes

1. I must admit that I was uncertain about Russell's attempts to see Northern Ireland in terms of the Shoah. To be clear, this is not something Russell simply imposes on MacLaverty's work – MacLaverty does invite such a reading, especially in Grace Notes; however, I do think that such a parallel also asks to be held up to more critical scrutiny than Russell offers.

2. Cleary's analysis draws on Nancy Armstrong's seminal Desire and Domestic Fiction: A Political History of the Novel (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1990).
