Name of author:   Laura Snell

Thesis title:  The cochlear implant journey: an exploration of the lived experiences of young adult cochlear implant users.

University awarding degree:  Lancaster University, UK, (PhD 2013)

This qualitative study focussed on the lived experiences of 16 young adult cochlear implant users, aged 19 – 30 years old. The findings provide an insight into the young adults’ experiences at this stage of their implant journey and demonstrate that cochlear implant technology does not necessarily destroy or limit identities, or restrict opportunities. Instead, for the young adult users in this study, boundaries are blurred as the cochlear implant is embodied in multifarious ways and provides a means of fluidly negotiating the deaf and hearing worlds, whilst still being deaf.
