Thesis title: Disability as an Entanglement: A New Materialist Reimagination of Disability
University awarding degree: University of Waikato, New Zealand
Degree awarded and year: PhD, 2019
This thesis reimagines notions of (learning) disability and disability oppression, using new materialist theory. Arguing that the view of disability as negative ontology plays a key role in the validation and perpetuation of disability oppression, key limitations inherent in much disability theory to date are then explored. Thereafter, it demonstrates how disability can be viewed as an ongoing series of entanglements; ones which materialise in such a way that disability oppression is reiterated. Key problematic entanglements are examined, including the notion of identity and affective practices, and suggestions for change within the disability rights movement and disability studies are proposed.
