Thesis title: Disability access and local government: Co-researching the City of Bunbury’s aim to become the Most Accessible Regional City in Australia

University awarding degree: Edith Cowan University, Western Australia

Degree awarded and year: PhD, 2020

Using participatory action research, this PhD study investigated the facilitators of disability access in local government, with a focus on the City of Bunbury in Western Australia. The research group consisted of a PhD researcher with industry experience and co-researchers with lived experience of disability. The researchers engaged City of Bunbury executives and technical staff in dialogue about the impact of current design policies and practices on disability access in public infrastructure. The study identified examples of positive practice and recommended additional systemic safeguards to embed universal design into planning processes – in particular, co-design of infrastructure with people with disabilities.
