Thesis title: Rising to a New Role: Disabled People's Organisations as Leaders of Disability-inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction

Currently, little is known on people with disabilities in disaster, specifically whether Disabled People’s Organisations (DPOs) could be leading disaster risk reduction (DRR) activities. This qualitative multi-method research study aimed to explore the experiences of three DPOs leading DRR projects funded by the Disability Rights Fund in three hazard-prone areas of Indonesia. Findings show there is a fertile ground for active involvement and leaderships of people with disabilities in Indonesian laws, and the three DPOs successfully self-initiated and led DRR initiatives within their local communities and were instrumental in contributing to collective community-based DRR efforts by working alongside mainstream DRR multi-stakeholders.
