Thesis Title: Design of Housing that Improves the Quality of Life of the High-Needs Elderly in New Zealand
University awarding degree: Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand
Degree awarded and year: PhD, 2020
Impairments typically increase as age advances. However, the design of housing often fails to accommodate the needs of older people with impairments and care requirements, resulting in reduced quality of life. Perceptions and spatial usage of 30 older people requiring care are explored through an ethnographic investigation including full-day observation and interviews. A variety of quality of life relating to physical environments is identified, which includes maintaining control and high quality of care, as well as accommodating important activities, relationships and possessions. Refining key design considerations, this thesis establishes a holistic design framework for improved quality of life.
