Thesis title: Caring and Disability in Rural Australia: A Feminist Standpoint Analysis

University awarding degree: University of South Australia, Australia

Degree awarded and year: PhD, 2020

The aim of the study was to explore intersectionalities of gender, social class and rurality, the visibility of family carers, their experiences, ways of knowing and accomplishments in relation to caring for a family member born with disability. The use of the term disability is appropriate because it is the result of the interaction of the person with impairment and the attitudinal, social, and environmental factors in place, issues that the critical feminist approach applied in this research is concerned about. Fourteen family carers, mainly mothers, were interviewed. Themes to emerge were gender and caring; caring and emotional wellbeing; service provision/support; and concerns for the future. Few studies have explored how rural mothers of people born with disability could develop social capital. No feminist research has taken place with families caring for a person with disability in rural areas.
