Thesis title:“I wish I had learnt to keep myself safe” – sexuality and relationships education (sre) for pupils with autistic spectrum condition

University awarding degree:University of Kent, UK

Degree awarded and year:PhD, 2019

This thesis explores the effectiveness of Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) for autistic individuals. The thesis begins by gaining the views of autistic pupils and SRE school coordinators via focus groups and interviews. The findings from these qualitative studies were utilized in the development of an SRE programme which was piloted within two autism specific schools. This explored many socio-sexual areas which many autistic individuals find difficult to develop due to the abstract nature of the wider social world. The study results indicate improvement in certain attitude and knowledge areas and provides a foundation for further work.
