This qualitative research aimed to increase the understanding of disability by examining the lived experiences of three mothers raising their disabled child in Trinidad and Tobago. The findings revealed mothers experienced psychological pressures upon diagnosis, had varying perceptions of disability, perceived themselves as their children’s “owners” assuming lifelong, intense caregiving roles, and finally, they perceived the government as inefficient in addressing disabled children’s needs. Through an analysis of disability models, this research showed the importance of the government in promoting an equitable and inclusive society for disabled children and their caregivers through an appreciation for the work mothers do.
