Acknowledgements

Many people and institutions have helped to make the idea of this supplement a reality. We extend deep appreciation to the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in Canada which funded the special issue, including funds for open-access publication via a grant to the Faculty of Health Sciences, American University of Beirut.

Prior to IDRC, the Ford Foundation’s regional office in Cairo had supported the network through a long-term commitment that enabled the network to grow into what it is today. The Population Council office in Egypt provided a supportive institutional base during the early days of the network.

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the American University of Beirut (AUB) deserves special thanks for providing a conducive academic base from which the network has been coordinated since the late 1990s.

Thanks also go to Pathika Martin at the RHM London office for help in its production and publication and to Ghada Saad at AUB who supported the work of the guest editor. Heartfelt appreciation is also extended to the peer reviewers for this special issue, all of whom gave generously of their time to provide comments which have greatly improved the quality of the papers. Above all, thanks are due to the authors of the papers for the patience throughout this process and to members of the network who supported the paper authors in helping to bring this project to fruition.

The authors alone are responsible for the views expressed in the articles. These do not necessarily represent the views, decisions or policies of the institutions with which they are affiliated.
