Abstract

Alkhawajah, A. M., Jain, S., Larbi, E., Algindan, Y. and Abahussein, A. 1994. Mouse as an animal model for cutaneous leishmaniasis: A comparison between two sites. J. Appl. Anim. Res., 5: 47–52.

This study was carried out to compare age and size of lesions of induced cutaneous leishmaniasis in the foot pad and the base of the tail of BALB/C mice. When mice were inoculated at the base of the tail the rate of development of lesions tended to be slow and non-uniform. The age of lesions ranged from 2 to 7 weeks and the size from 25 ± 0.12 to 90 ± 12.0 mm2 although all mice were inoculated on the same day. In contrast lesions developed faster and around the same time when the foot pads of mice were inoculated The lesion size ranged from 7.1 ± 0.9 to 8.2 ± 0.8 mm and the age from 6 to 8 weeks. Therefore, the lesions in the foot pad are more suitable for therapeutic trials than those in the base of the tail.
