Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Prospective Mathematics and Science Teachers’ Use of Metaphors to Conceptualize and Understand Reflective Thinking

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate prospective teachers’ use and conceptualization of metaphors on reflective thinking. This study analyses the metaphorical conceptions of reflective thinking concepts of 71 PTs in a course on “Principles and Methods in Instruction”. Metaphors produced regarding reflective thinking fall under 9 categories and a total of 62 metaphors were produced. Most frequently used metaphors were those of “mirror” and “machine”.
