Abstract

The chemical composition and antioxidant activity of the essential oil from the leaves and flowers of Baccharis odorata Kunth grown in Cuzco, Peru were studied. One hundred forty-one compounds were identified in the essential oil. Oxygenated sesquiterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons were the most represented classes of volatiles with 36.1% and 33.6%, respectively. The main constituents of the essential oil were δ-cadinene (9.1%), β-pinene (8.8%), α-cadinol (8.1%) and limonene (6.2%). Antioxidant properties were examined using the DPPH ferric-reducinging antioxidant power assays. For DPPH radical scavenging assay, the IC50 value was 10.2 ± 1.6 μg/mL, while the FRAP was between 301.3 ± 23.4 to 480.2 ± 21.2 μM of ascorbic acid equivalents.
