Abstract

Coin is one of the most important tools in business exchange processes. In addition to the four circulation coins of NT$10,S,l,and O.S,a new version of NT$SO coin was introduced in 1992. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the discriminability of NT$SO with the existing coin system. Two experiments were adopted in this study. In experiment I, 30 male and 30 female college students performed both visual and touch trials of discrimination in all five coin combinations to test the search times needed and error rates committed. Data analysis showed that: (1) NT$l was the worst both in search time and error rate of the visual trial and easily confused with NT$0.5;(2) NT$l was also the worst in error rate of blind trials and easily confused with NT$S and O.S; and (3) NT$SO was the second worst in error rate of blind trials, and easily confused with NT$SO. In Experiment II, the subjects (30 males and 30 females) were asked to sort out the following sets of coin mixtures by touch only NT$50/NT$10, NT$S/NT$l, and NT$1/NT$0.5. The results showed that: the sorting of NT$5/NT$1 mixture took the longest time with the worst error rate; NT$l/NT$O.S was the best.
