Abstract
The verb allentabit is for two reasons problematic. In the first place by reason of the betacism occurring in it and secondly because of the rareness of the verb and its meaning. The betacism justifies further attention since it can possibly shed more light on the dating of the hymn and the character of the hymnographer. In this investigation attention is also paid to the current trends of thought relating to the meaning of allentare. Furthermore, this study is an attempt to scrutinize the problems surrounding this obscure and problematic verb and to put it in a broader perspective.
