In 1982, the University of Technology of Compiègne organised the 7th congress of the Société de Biomécanique. More than a quarter of century later, this congress comes back to Compiègne for its 33th edition and it is a great pleasure for me and a real honour to preside over the organising committee of this congress and to welcome you to Compiègne.

The congress is focused on ‘Biomechanics and Innovating Technologies’ and four invited conferences are proposed on this topics by Richard Ehman (Mayo Clinic-Rochester, MN, USA), Pascal Leprince (Hôpital Pitié-Salpétrière-Paris), Pascal Madeleine (Aalborg University) and Hervé Petite (Hôpital Lariboisière-Paris). Some specific sessions or debates concern the PhD students and their professional future.

The organizing committee also wish to honour Michel Jaffrin, pioneer of the Biomechanics in Compiègne and ancient president of the «Société de Biomécanique». Beside these particular events, the scientific program includes 90 communications, the majority of them (50) being presented orally and 40 by a poster. Different sessions represent all these contributions: muscle biomechanics, movement analysis, sport biomechanics, models in biomechanics, tissues biomechanics, biomaterials, bone and joint biomechanics, fluid biomechanics, cardio-vascular biomechanics or instrumentation and biomechanics.

In addition, several leading industries concerned with biomechanics exhibit their new products during all the congress and some space and time are preserved to allow useful exchanges between congress's participants and industrials. Beyond the very attractive scientific program of the congress lunches and dinners, notably the gala dinner of monday evening, offer some convivial pauses. The members of the great family constituted by the «Société de Biomécanique» have, year after year, a real pleasure to meet each other. Every congress of the Société de Biomécanique finds a part of its strength in the friendly contacts between the members of the society and the organisers have done their best to perpetuate the spirit of the Société de Biomécanique.

In the name of Pr Philippe Gorce, President of the Société de Biomécanique and of all the members of the organizing and scientific committees of this 33rd congress of the Société de Biomécanique, please let me wish you very pleasant days in Compiègne.

Thank you so much to all participants and to the institutions, organisation and industries which have helped the organisation of this congress. The logos of those identified at the time where this editorial is written are reproduced below.
