1. Andrew J. Nathan notes that, according to regime theory, authoritarian political systems are inherently fragile because of their ‘weak legitimacy, overreliance on coercion, overcentralisation of decision making, and predominance of personal power over institutional norms’. However, China's authoritarianism does not really conform to this model and has avoided some of these critical shortcomings, which Nathan credits to the nature of the CCP regime's institutionalisation.
