Notes

The title alludes to Gourevitch's (Citation1978) highly influential study of ‘the second image reversed’, which in turn referenced Waltz's (Citation1959) account of the three levels of analysis.

1 ‘Iconoclastic’ is a word that recurs in reviews of Waltz's book (Jervis Citation1987: 856; Westerfield Citation1968: 237).

2 On the contrasts between historicist and modernist modes of studying international relations, see Hall (Citation2012: 83–106).

3 On interpretivism, foreign-policy analysis and international relations, see Bevir, Daddow and Hall (Citation2013).
