Ceramic Tribology—Needs and Opportunities

Pages 164-173 | Published online: 25 Mar 2008

Abstract

A review of the state-of-the-science of ceramic tribology is presented. The ceramics considered consist of both oxides and non-oxides running against themselves or metals in an unlubricated condition. The measurement techniques and apparatus are described as are some of the available theories which describe wear phenomena. Characterization of the materials by a variety of analytical techniques is also discussed. A summary of the area is provided and the additional need and opportunities defined.
