Dynamic Adsorption in Mixed Lubrication

Pages 239-245 | Published online: 25 Mar 2008

Abstract

The effect of additive adsorption on friction and wear of sliding contacts under mixed lubrication conditions has been analysed. Dynamic aspects of adsorption are taken into account by relating desorption in the contact zone to increased temperature rather than to some mechanical action. The analysis shows that shear properties of adsorbed monolayers can be determined from friction measurements, but this requires knowledge of adsorption energy and flash temperature if systematic errors are to be avoided.
