Abstract
Air entrainment in squeeze film damper bearings results in a type of cavitation that is considerably different from the cavitation traditionally assumed for hydrodynamic bearings. The fluid lubricant in this case is highly compressible and results in a drastic influence on the pressure distribution. This describes and experimental procedure for determining the density correlation for and oil-air mixture. This correlation is then utilized in the Reynolds equation to determine the influence lubricant compressibility has on the pressure distribution in a squeeze film damper bearing.
