Numerical Modeling of a Concurrent PIT/PIV Experiment with TLC Particles in a Reservoir Model Subject to Periodic Thermal Forcing

Abstract

The present investigation is concerned with the transient flow response of a reservoir model to periodic thermal forcing at water surface. A previously reported concurrent PIT/PIV experiment is numerically reproduced using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code coupled with a Discrete Phase Model (DPM). Both qualitative and quantitative agreements are achieved between the present numerical simulation and the experiment. A parametric study is also carried out using the numerical model to determine the dependence of the flow response and its stability properties on the Grashof number.
